Gloria's Pet Preparedness Tips

ALWAYS PLAN AHEAD FOR STORMS WHILE IN FLORIDA

As with any preparation for imminent danger to yourself and your pets  the number one rule is "ALWAYS BE PREPARED" - It's not just for boy  scouts!

Gloria's Pet Sitting Service has compiled the following list of things you  can do in advance to make certain you have the best chance for  keeping you and your pet safe while in a tropical storm or hurricane  here in South Brevard and the Beaches area.

 CALM BEFORE THE STORM:

1.) Make sure that your pets are current on their vaccinations.
(Pet shelters may require proof of vaccines.)

2.) Have a current photograph of your pet(s) with you at all times.
(This will help identify your pet in case you become, heaven forbid, separated.)

3.) Keep a collar with identification on your pet and have a leash on  hand to control your pet.

4.) Have a properly-sized pet carrier for each animal - carriers should be  large enough for the animal to stand and turn around.

5.) Plan your evacuation strategy early and don't leave your pet  behind!

6.) Specialized pet shelters, animal control shelters, veterinary clinics and  friends and relatives out of harm's way are ALL potential refuges for  your pet during a disaster.

7.) If you plan to shelter your pet - work it into your evacuation route  planning.

8.) If your pet requires medications of any kind, stock up before hand.

9.) Have at least a One Week supply of food for each of your pets.  Stores, Veterinarians and many other facilities often close due to such  extreme weather conditions.

As with any emergency, prior planning will make your stressful time  much easier to deal with. Know ahead of time what you need to do with  both yourself and your pet.

 DURING THE STORM:
1.) Animals brought to a pet shelter are required to have:  Proper  identification collar and rabies tag, proper identification on all belongings,  a carrier or cage, a leash, an ample supply of food, water and food  bowls, as well as any necessary medications, specific care instructions  and news papers or trash bags for clean-up after them.

2.) Bring pets indoor well in advance of a storm - reassure them and  remain calm.

3.) Pet shelters will be filled on first come, first served basis.  Call ahead  and determine availability.

4.) Make travel and boarding arrangements ahead of time when  possible.

 AFTER THE DISASTER:
1.) Walk pets on a leash until they become re-oriented to their home.

2.) Familiar scents and landmarks may be altered and pets could easily  be confused and become lost.

3.) Downed power lines, reptiles brought in with high water and debris  can all pose a threat for animals after a disaster.

4.) If pets cannot be found after a disaster, contact the local animal  control office to find out where lost animals can be recovered.

5.) Bring along a picture of your pet if possible. After a disaster animals  can become aggressive or defensive - monitor their behavior for  changes.

6.) Comfort your pet and reassure them as often as possible to ease the  transition from disaster status to normal routines.

7.) If for some reason you are unable to return home, please prepare  accommodations at a pet-friendly hotel or other lodging facility friendly  to pets.

ABOVE ALL ELSE:
Don't forget your pet when preparing a family disaster plan! *

Make Ready Your Disaster Preparedness Kit

  1. Have at least one gallon of water for each person and pet per day. (Sometimes utilities are down for a week or more depending on severity of the storm. Plan ahead for these extreme conditions with at least enough for three (3) days!)
  2. Store water tightly in clean plastic containers such as two liter soft drink bottles.
  3. If you need to sanitize water, the general rule is 16 drops of chlorine per gallon of water when boiling is unavailable. (More is not always better here.)
  4. Store enough food for at least three (3) days, preferably a week, of non-perishable food that DOES NOT require refrigeration. Add some comfort foods to ease your trying times!
  5. Try to avoid salty foods as they can increase your thirst thereby depleting your valuable fresh water source.
  6. Prepare for a no-electricity situation by having manual can openers. Have utensils as well as cooking implements that require no utilities such as a camping stove or gas or charcoal grill or a fireplace. (NEVER light a fire indoors, carbon monoxide and smoke can kill!)
  7. Clean air can be a luxury in the event of some storms and emergency situations. Plastic can be used with duct tape to seal a room and then if you have a generator or electric service you can run a HEPA filter system to clean the air.
  8. When air is hard to breath from pollutants or particulates, using a dense weave cloth or other tight weave fabric can make breathing a little easier when these pollution types rise. Or, have face masks handy in the event of such an emergency.
  9. FIRST AID KIT: Every emergency preparation should include a First Aid Kit. Make certain that any prescription drugs and supplies you need are filled in advance and also include: sterile gloves; sterile dressings; soap for cleansing wounds and self; antibiotic and burn ointments; eye wash solution; a thermometer. It may also be a good idea to have a fully charged cell phone. car charger for cell phone(s), and some basic items such as toilet paper, scissors, tweezers, batteries, pain reliever(s), antacid, and a laxative.
  10. And of course, always make sure that you have plenty of pet food, treats, toys and all you can to make your pet(s) more comfortable in times of crisis like disasters and emergencies. Pets can change personalities under extreme circumstances so be vigilant but loving when it comes to handling your pet(s) in times of emergencies.
